Chapter: Cohabitation with Wives
Both husband and wife are obliged to treat each other with propriety. It is unlawful for either of them to delay what the other is entitled to, and it is reprehensible to provide it grudgingly.
Once the marriage contract is complete, a free woman who is normally subject to intercourse must be handed over in the husband’s house if he requests it, unless she conditioned her remaining in her own home1 or in her own town. Should either of them ask for a postponement, the customary period must be granted as a duty—but not for assembling a trousseau.
A female slave is to be delivered only at night, and he may have relations with her so long as this causes her no harm2 or prevents her from performing an obligatory act. He may also travel with his free wife unless she has stipulated otherwise.
