Chapter: The Wedding Banquet
Hosting a wedding banquet is a recommended sunnah, even if it is no more than a single sheep.1 Responding to the invitation is obligatory the first time a Muslim—one whom it is unlawful to shun—invites you specifically, provided no wrongdoing will occur there. If the invitation is open to all (al-jaflā), or it is on the third day, or the inviter is a dhimmī, attending is merely discouraged.
A person observing an obligatory fast should attend briefly and then depart, while one observing a voluntary fast should break it if the host insists. Eating at the banquet is not mandatory, though it is permissible.
(1) Manuscript M omits the words "wa-law" (even if).
