If both spouses enter Islam simultaneously, or if a man married to a woman from the People of the Book embraces Islam, their marriage ⦗1⦘ remains in force. However, if she later becomes Muslim—or if, in a marriage between two non-People-of-the-Book spouses, one of them accepts Islam—before consummation, the contract is annulled. Should she be the first to convert, no dower is due; if he converts before her, she is entitled to one-half of the dower.
If one of them embraces Islam after consummation, the matter is held in abeyance until the waiting period (ʿidda) expires. If the other spouse accepts Islam during that interval, the marriage continues; otherwise, it is deemed dissolved retroactively from the moment the first spouse entered Islam.
If both spouses—or either of them—apostatize after consummation, the matter is likewise suspended until the waiting period ends; if apostasy occurs before consummation, the marriage is void ⦗2⦘.
