Book of Manumission
Introduction
Book of Manumission¹
Manumission ranks among the most meritorious acts of devotion. It is recommended to free a slave who is capable of earning a livelihood, while doing so for one who lacks such capacity is discouraged. Emancipation may also be made contingent upon the owner’s death; this is known as tadbīr (posthumous manumission).
(1) Manuscript B reads: “Manumission, its conditional suspension, and tadbir (post-mortem manumission).”
