and “two-thirds,” or “one-third and the residue,” or both of them on a denominator of three; and “one-quarter,” or “one-eighth and the residue,” or either of them together with the half on denominators of four or eight—none of these cases admit of ʿawl (augmentation).
When the half is combined with two-thirds, or with one-third, or with one-sixth— or with the residue—the basic denominator is six, and through ʿawl it may rise to eight, nine, or ten, whether the result is even or odd. When a quarter is combined with two-thirds, or a third, or a sixth, the basic denominator is twelve, and it may be raised by ʿawl to thirteen, fifteen, or seventeen, all of them odd numbers. When an eighth is combined with a sixth, or with two-thirds, the basic denominator is twenty-four, and it may be raised by ʿawl to twenty-seven.
If, once the fixed shares have been allocated, something remains and there is no agnatic heir, that remainder is returned to each fixed-share heir in proportion to his share, except the spouses.
