Chapter on Staked Competitions (al-sabq)
Competitions are permissible on foot, with any animals, with boats, and with javelins, yet offering a prize is only valid in races involving camels, horses, or in contests of archery.
The mounts must be individually designated and of the same kind, and the archers as well as the shooting distance must be fixed according to customary practice.
Such a competition is treated as a juʿālah (contingent reward); each party⦗1⦘ may withdraw from it. An archery match (munāḍalah) is valid when confined to named participants who are proficient in shooting.
(1) The J manuscript reads: "li-kull faskhuha" (each party may annul it).
