Chapter on ḥajr (legal interdiction)
Whoever is unable to settle any part of his debt is neither compelled to pay nor lawfully imprisoned. As for the one who possesses assets equal to his liability—or more1—he is not placed under interdiction; rather, he is instructed to pay, and if he refuses
(1) All extant copies read as above. In al-Rawd the text runs: “Whoever is able to pay his debt is not to be placed under interdiction.” The Indian edition of al-Rawd concurs with the wording we have adopted.
