Chapter: Acts That Nullify Ablution

Ablution is broken by: anything that exits from either natural passage; anything that leaves the rest of the body if it is urine, feces, or any other impure substance in significant quantity; loss of consciousness—apart from a brief doze¹ taken while seated or standing; touching a penis that is still attached to its owner, or a vulva, with the back or the palm of one’s hand; either organ being touched by an individual of indeterminate sex; a man touching his own penis²—or a woman her own vulva—with sexual desire in either case; a man’s touching a woman with lust, or her touching him with it; and touching the anal opening.

Touching hair, a tooth³, or a nail does not invalidate ablution.

(1) In manuscript “J”: “except for a small amount of sleep while sitting or standing.” (2) In manuscript “J”: “for his remembrance.” (3) The phrase “and it is recommended” is missing from manuscript “M.”
