Risālah fī al-Qurʾān wa-Kalām AllāhIbn Qudama

the Fire1, a deviant who has led you off the straight path—someone in whom no merit is known in any sacred science or in any sound branch of religion, save for the reprehensible, ill-omened discipline of kalām (speculative theology) in which no good whatsoever can be found. He was reared upon iʿtizāl (Muʿtazilite doctrine) for forty years, debating in its defense and calling people to it.

Speech (kalâm) is called such only metaphorically, because it is an account or expression of it, whereas true speech is a meaning intrinsic to the speaker’s very essence. Some limited themselves to this definition, while others—seeking to avoid anything they knew fell under it—added whatever contradicted silence, muteness, and other impediments to speech. They then proceeded to assert letters and sounds in God’s speech, which amounts to corporealizing it, and to attribute a language to it, which amounts to anthropomorphizing… (1) This refers to Abu al-Hasan al-Ash‘arī, but in his later years his position changed so that he affirmed God’s speech as the righteous predecessors (al-salaf al-ṣāliḥ) had done. Abu ‘Amr al-Dānī records in his al-Risāla al-Wāfiya li-madhhab Ahl al-Sunna fī al-I‘tiqādāt wa-Uṣūl al-Diyānāt (p. 73) that Abu Bakr al-Baqillānī said: “Abu al-Hasan al-Ash‘arī said, ‘Whoever says, “My articulation of the Qur’ān is created,” is a misguided innovator and ascribes to God what none of the salaf of the Ummah ever held.’”
