A Treatise on the Quran and the Speech of Allah …
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
What do the jurists, the imams of the religion, and the dignitaries of the Muslims—may Allah grant them the success bestowed upon those who truly know Him—say about someone who believes that the speech of Allah, exalted be He, is only an abstract meaning that subsists in His Essence, and that these surahs, verses, letters, and words preserved in the muṣḥafs (written codices) of the Muslims and in the hearts of the memorizers are not the speech of the Lord of all worlds?
Are such people the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah, agreeing with the imams of their faith, holding fast to the sunnah of their Prophet, and treading the path of their righteous predecessors?
Or is it rather those who say that the Noble Quran—the eternal speech that is the mighty speech of Allah—is precisely these surahs, verses, letters, and words that are in the muṣḥafs of the Muslims and in the hearts of all people? Which of the two parties is nearer to the truth from their Lord, more firmly adhering to the sunnah of His Prophet, and more faithfully following the way of the pious forebears?
Issue us a fatwa, and may you be rewarded and blessed.
