the Wise Reminder, the Straight Path—one that capricious desires can never bend, tongues can never confound, whose wonders never cease, that never wears out through constant repetition, and from which the scholars are never satiated. In another wording: “minds do not differ over it.” It is that which, when the jinn first heard it, they exclaimed, “We have indeed heard a wondrous Qur’an that guides to right conduct” (Q 72:1–2). Whoever speaks in its terms speaks the truth; whoever acts by it earns a reward; whoever judges by it does so with justice; and whoever calls to it is guided to a straight path.
Allah, Exalted is He, says: “Indeed, this is My straight path; so follow it, and do not follow other paths, lest they scatter you away from His way” (Q 6:153).
He also says: “Alif-Lām-Mīm-Ṣād. A Book sent down to you—let there be no tightness in your breast concerning it… Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not follow other patrons apart from Him” (Q 7:1–3).
And He says: “This is a blessed Book that We have sent down, so follow it and be mindful of Allah, that you may receive mercy, lest you should say, ‘The Book was only sent down to two communities before us and we were indeed unaware of their study,’ or lest you should say, ‘Had the Book been sent down to us, we would have been better guided than they.’ Now there has come to you a clear proof from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. Who, then, is more unjust than one who rejects the signs of Allah and turns away from them? We shall requite those who turn away from Our signs with a dreadful punishment because of that turning away” (Q 6:155-157).
Thus the Almighty has declared that He will punish anyone who turns away from His revelations—absolutely, whether he actively denies them or not—with a grievous punishment for their turning away. This makes plain that whoever does not acknowledge what the Messenger brought is an unbeliever, whether he thinks it false, or arrogantly refuses to believe, or turns away in pursuit of his whims, or falls into doubt.
