and raising the voice so that the requisite number can hear, provided that nothing prevents it.

Its recommended practices are: ritual purity, covering the private parts, removing any impurity, supplicating for the Muslims, that the same person deliver both sermons and lead the prayer, raising the voice in them as much as one is able, preaching while standing on an elevated place and leaning on a sword1 or a staff, and sitting briefly between the two.

If he refuses to stand, or if he delivers the sermons while seated, he must separate them with a moment of silence.

It is recommended that both sermons be concise, the second shorter than the first.

There is no harm in delivering the sermon from a written sheet.

1) Nothing authentically proves that the Prophet, peace be upon him, ever preached while resting on a sword. What is soundly transmitted is that he leaned on a bow or a staff, as in the hadith of al-Hakam ibn Hazn, which Abu Dawud entitled in his Sunan (1/658, no. 1096) “Chapter: A man delivering a sermon while leaning on a bow”; the report contains no mention of a sword. Ibn al-Qayyim states in Zad al-Maad (1/190): “No reliable narration shows that he leaned on a sword; many uninformed people imagine that he held a sword on the pulpit to signify that the religion was established by the sword. This is a serious error for two reasons. First, what is authentically reported is that he leaned on a staff or a bow. Second, the religion was established by revelation; the sword’s role was merely to eradicate error and idolatry. Even the Prophet’s own city, from which he preached, was won through the Quran, not by the sword.”
