Chapter on Voluntary Prayers
These constitute the most meritorious bodily devotion after jihad and the pursuit of knowledge.
The finest of them are those whose congregational performance has been recommended.
The most emphatic are: the eclipse prayer, then the rain-seeking prayer, then the nightly Tarawih, and finally Witr, whose minimum is a single rakʿah and whose maximum6 is eleven. The lowest degree of completeness is three rakʿahs concluded with two taslīms (final salutations), though it is also permissible to perform them all with one uninterrupted taslīm. Their prescribed time extends from after the ‘Isha prayer until the break of dawn.
(6) The wording in al-Wajiz, p. 49, is “afdaluhu” (the most excellent).
