Chapter: What Constitutes a Valid Admission and What Invalidates It

If someone is sued for a thousand and he answers, “Yes,” “You are right,” “I acknowledge it,” “Take it,” “Weigh it,” or “Receive it,” that counts as a binding admission. It is not an admission, however, if he says, “I will acknowledge,” “I do not deny,” “Take,” “Weigh,” or “Open your sleeve.”

Saying bala (indeed) in reply to the question, “Do I not have such-and-such against you?” is an admission; saying naʿam (yes) is not—unless the respondent is an uneducated layman.
