Training a dog or a cheetah is verified by three signs: it bolts off when released, it pulls back when rebuked, and when it seizes the quarry it does not eat from it.
Training a bird of prey is established by two signs: it flies off when dispatched and it returns when called.
It is further stipulated that the animal actually wound the quarry; if it kills by battering or strangling, the meat is not lawful.

Intention. The hunter must release the instrument with the purpose of taking game. If he pronounces the Name and lets it go without intending to hunt, or he intends to hunt but has not actually seen the quarry1, or the trained animal goes off on its own and kills, the meat is not lawful2.

Saying “In the name of Allah” when releasing the trained animal3 or when shooting the weapon; in this matter, forgetfulness is not excused.
If the wounded game then falls into water, topples from a height, is trampled, or is subjected to any other cause that on its own would ordinarily kill4, its meat is not lawful. The same applies if he shoots it with a sharp weapon coated in poison. However, if he shoots it in mid-air, or while it is on a tree or a wall, and it falls dead, the meat is lawful.
