Among the words that make taʿzīr obligatory is for someone to address another person with any of the following: “O kāfir1 (unbeliever), O fāsiq (open sinner), O fājir (wicked libertine), O shaqī (wretch), O dog, O donkey, O he-goat, O Rāfiḍī (Rafidite), O khabīth (vile one), O liar, O khāʾin (traitor), O qarnān (cuckold), O qawwād (pimp), O dayyūth (man with no protective jealousy), O ʿalaq (worthless hanger-on).
Taʿzīr is likewise imposed on anyone who says to a dhimmī, “O ḥājj,” or who curses him without legitimate cause2.
(1) Provided he does not deem him guilty of kufr (unbelief); see Nihayat al-Mubtadiin and al-Lubdi, Hashiya, p. 401.
(2) Al-Furuʿ, 6/116, states: “He is not permitted to curse him without a valid reason, unless the Christian himself has done something that warrants it.”
