Diya for Limbs
Whoever destroys an organ of which a human being has only one—such as the nose, the tongue, or the male member—must pay a full diya.
Whoever destroys an organ of which a person has two—such as the two hands, the two feet, the two eyes, the two ears, the two eyebrows, the two breasts, or the two testicles—must pay the full diya; if only one of the pair is destroyed, half of the diya is due.¹ ²
For the four eyelids, the diya is payable; for a single eyelid, one-quarter of it. For all the fingers of the hands, the diya is required; for one finger, one-tenth. For a fingertip (phalange), if it is from the thumb the compensation is one-half of one-tenth of the diya, and if it is from any other finger, one-third of one-tenth.³ The same scale applies to the toes. For a tooth, the indemnity is five camels. For eliminating the use of any organ, a full diya is owed.⁴
