Section
The owner of an animal is obliged to feed it and give it water. Should he withhold sustenance, he is compelled to provide it; if he still refuses or is unable, he is forced to sell the animal, lease its services, or slaughter it—provided its meat is lawful to eat.
It is unlawful to curse the animal, to burden it with excessive hardship, to milk it in a way that harms its offspring, to strike it on the face, to brand it there, or to slaughter it when its flesh is not permissible.
Nevertheless, one may use the animal for a purpose other than that for which it was originally created.
