Book of Liʿān
If a man¹ accuses his wife of adultery, he incurs the fixed penalty for slander (qadhf) or a discretionary chastisement, unless he produces clear evidence or enters into liʿān.
The procedure for liʿān is that the husband declares four times, “I testify by Allah that I am indeed among the truthful in what I have accused her of—adultery,”² pointing to her each time; then, on the fifth occasion, he adds³: “that the curse of Allah be upon me if I am one of the liars” (Q 24:7).
Next, the wife declares four times, “I testify by Allah that he is surely lying in the charge of adultery he has levelled against me,” and on the fifth she adds: “that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he is among the truthful” (Q 24:9).
It is recommended⁴ that they perform this mutual imprecation standing, in the presence of a group of witnesses numbering no fewer than four. The judge should instruct someone to place a hand over the mouths of both husband and wife at the fifth utterance, admonishing them: “Fear Allah, for this is the decisive statement; the punishment of this world is lighter than that of the Hereafter.”
