Chapter on Menstruation

Menstruation does not occur before a girl has completed nine lunar years,6 nor after she reaches fifty, and it does not coincide with pregnancy.7 The minimum duration of menstruation is one full day and night,8 the maximum is fifteen days, while the common length is six or seven days.

(6) The word “sanin” (years) is missing in manuscript A. (7) Second opinion: a pregnant woman may still menstruate. This was the view adopted by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya, endorsed by Ibn Muflih, and deemed correct by al-Mardawi. See: Ibn Taymiyya, Al-Ikhtiyarat, p. 30; Ibn Muflih, Al-Furu, 1:267; al-Mardawi, Al-Insaf, 1:357. (8) Sharh al-Iqna clarifies: “The intended duration is one full day and night, i.e. twenty-four hours; if the bleeding ceases before that, it is classified as irregular bleeding.” Nayl al-Maarib, 1:104.
