(3) In manuscript B the reading is "ihdahuma"; the same occurs in N, and manuscript J likewise has "ihdahuma". (4) The word "tahir" (ritually pure) is missing from manuscript A. Manuscripts B and J contain only the word "tahur" (purifying). (5) Al-Lubdi writes in his marginal note (p. 36): “This is the wording found in al-Muntaha and al-Iqna, and its implication is that tahir water is not sufficient—namely, the drops that fall from the face and hands of someone performing tayammum (dry ablution). One copy reads ‘tah’, limiting the ruling to that which has touched filth, yet what is really meant is tahur (purifying), in agreement with the other authorities. Nevertheless, it may be said that there is no reason to require tahur specifically, because the objective is the strength of removal; for that reason soap, ashnan (alkaline washing powder), bran, and similar substances are valid, and the cleansing power found in tahur water is also present in tahir water.”
