Whoever carries out a task for someone else with his permission, without any stipulation of a wage1 or a juʿālah2, is entitled to the customary remuneration3. If he acts without permission, he is entitled to nothing—save in two instances:

- Should he return a runaway slave to his owner, he receives the amount laid down by the Lawgiver: one dinar or twelve dirhams.
(1) The word "taqdir" does not appear in manuscript M; it was inserted in manuscript N in the commentary.
(2) Manuscript N reads "aw" instead of the conjunction "wa".
(3) Manuscript M has "mithluhu".
