Chapter: Acts That Make Ghusl Obligatory
They are seven in all:
-
The shifting of semen within the body. If a person senses it moving but holds it back so that it does not emerge, ghusl becomes obligatory. Should he perform ghusl for that movement and the semen later exits without any sensation of pleasure, he need not repeat the bath.
-
Its discharge from its normal outlet1—even if what comes out is blood—provided the emission is accompanied by pleasure, unless the person was asleep or in a similar state.
-
The complete insertion of the glans—or an equivalent depth—into a private part, without any barrier, whether vaginal or anal, even with a corpse, an animal, or a bird2. Ghusl, however, is not required except from a ten-year-old boy or a nine-year-old girl.
-
The embrace of Islam by a disbeliever, including one returning from apostasy.
-
The flow of menstrual blood3.
