and to consign merchandise for sale in return for a share of its profit. It is likewise permissible to entrust a riding animal, a colony of bees¹, or the like to someone who will care for them for a specified period in exchange for a portion of the animals themselves, while any increase belongs to them both. The arrangement is invalid, however, if the caretaker’s compensation is fixed as a share of the produce—such as milk, offspring, wool, or honey—in which case he is entitled instead to a wage equivalent to his services.
