Chapter: Ribā (Usury)

Ribā applies to every commodity that is sold by volume or by weight, even when the item is not edible.

Items measured by volume include all grains, spices, and liquids—except that water is not governed by the rules of ribā—as well as fruits such as dates, raisins, pistachios, hazelnuts, almonds, terebinth, hawthorn, jujube, apricots, olives, and salt.

Items measured by weight include gold, silver, copper, lead, iron, spun flax, cotton, silk, hair, hemp¹, wax, saffron, bread, and cheese.

Whatever is sold by count is exempt from ribā², even if it is edible, like melons.

(1) In manuscript B the reading is “al-inab” (grapes), the same as in N. (2) Manuscript B inserts the conjunction waw, yielding “wa la yajri” (and it does not run).
