Chapter: Wiping over the Leather Socks1
Wiping is permissible provided seven conditions are met: the socks are put on only after one has completed purification with water; they cover the entire area whose washing is obligatory—even if that requires fastening them; it is customarily possible to walk in them; they can remain on the feet by themselves; their use is lawful; their material is pure; and they are thick enough not to reveal the skin beneath.
A resident—and a traveler engaged in a sinful journey—may wipe over them for one day and one night, counting from the occurrence of minor impurity after they were put on, whereas a lawful traveler may wipe for three days along with their nights.
If someone began wiping while traveling and then became resident, or began while resident and then traveled, or is unsure when he first wiped, he may not exceed the resident’s time-limit2.
It is obligatory to wipe over the greater part of the upper surface of the khuff3; wiping the sole or heel neither suffices nor is it recommended.
Whenever something that obligates ghusl (a full ritual bath) occurs, or any part of the area that must be washed becomes exposed, or the time period expires, the wudu is nullified4.
