the canals of his ears1, wiping their outer surfaces with his thumbs. He then washes his feet together with the ankles—the two protruding bones.
Section
The recommended acts of ablution are eighteen2:
- Facing the qiblah;
- Using the siwak;
- Washing the hands three times;
- Beginning, before washing the face, with rinsing the mouth and drawing water into the nose;
- Performing these two actions vigorously for one who is not fasting;
- Being thorough in washing the rest of the limbs in all cases;
- Increasing the amount of water on the face;
- Combing through a thick beard;
- Interlacing the fingers;
- Taking fresh water for the ears;
- Giving precedence to the right side over the left;
- Extending the wash beyond the area that is obligatory;
- Performing the second and third washes;
- Keeping the intention present until the ablution is completed;
- Formulating it while washing the hands; and
- Pronouncing it softly.
After finishing he says, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger,”3 while lifting his gaze toward the sky.
He should also perform his ablution himself, without any assistant.4
(1) In manuscripts A and B, and likewise in N, the word appears as sabah in the singular.
(2) Manuscript N reads thaman ʿashrata (eighteen). Al-Lubdi notes in the margin (p. 21) that most copies have this form, and he considers it correct because, in Arabic, numerals from three to ten take the opposite gender of the counted noun, whereas two, one, and ten agree with it; however, if the noun being counted is omitted, both forms become acceptable.
(3) Reported by Muslim, 1/210, on the authority of ʿUqbah b. ʿAmir.
(4) Manuscript A reads muʿawin (assistant).
