Chapter on Concluding the Pact of Protection
Such a pact may be concluded3 only with the People of the Book, or with those who have a semblance of a revealed scripture, such as the Magians.4
The ruler is obliged to grant it whenever he is confident of their good faith and they commit themselves to four stipulations:
- They must pay the jizyah with their own hands, acknowledging their subordinate status.
(3) In manuscript A the phrase reads: "wa la tan‘aqid" (and it does not become valid).
(4) In manuscript M the phrase reads: "lahum" (for them).

أحدها: أن يعطوا الجزية عن يد وهم صاغرون.
