The conditions for a valid saʿy are eight: 1) intention; 2) being Muslim; 3) sound mind; 4) continuity; 5) walking if able; 6) that it follow a tawaf, even a recommended one such as the Arrival Tawaf; 7) completing seven laps; and 8) traversing the full distance between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwa.
If he starts1 at al-Marwa, that lap is not counted.
Its recommended practices are: ritual purity, covering the nakedness2, and close succession between it and the tawaf.
It is sunnah3 to drink4 from the water of Zamzam for whatever one wishes, to splash it on one’s body and clothes, and to say: “In the name of Allah. O Allah, make it for us beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, refreshment, fullness, and a cure for every illness. Wash my heart with it and fill it with awe of You.”
It is also sunnah5 to visit the Prophet’s grave, peace and blessings be upon him, and the graves of his two Companions—may Allah be pleased6 with them both. Praying in his mosque7 is recommended, and each prayer there counts as one thousand prayers.
In the Masjid al-Ḥarām it is worth one hundred thousand, and in the Masjid al-Aqṣā five hundred.
