he then assumes iḥrām for Hajj.1
Ifrād is to begin in iḥrām for Hajj and, once that is completed, to enter iḥrām for ʿumrah.
Qirān is to enter iḥrām for ʿumrah and then add Hajj to it before starting its circumambulation. Should he do the reverse—assuming iḥrām for Hajj first and only thereafter for ʿumrah—it is invalid.2
If someone enters iḥrām without specifying which rite he intends, his iḥrām remains valid,3 and he may later assign it to whichever form he chooses; anything he did beforehand is of no consequence.
Nevertheless, the Sunnah for one who intends a particular rite is to state it clearly and add the condition: “O Allah, I intend the following rite; make it easy for me and accept it from me. If I am prevented by any obstacle, then my release from iḥrām is wherever You detain me.”4
