Chapter on Iḥrām

Assuming iḥrām (the sacred state) becomes obligatory at the miqāt; for anyone whose residence lies within the limits of the miqāt, his home itself is his miqāt.

Iḥrām does not come into force while insanity, unconsciousness, or intoxication is present.2

Once it has taken effect, it is annulled only by apostasy. Sexual intercourse involving penetration before the first release from iḥrām corrupts the rite without terminating it, and the pilgrim is required3 to complete it and then perform a replacement pilgrimage.4

Whoever wishes to enter iḥrām may choose one of three intentions: tamattuʿ—which is the best option5—ifrād, or qirān.

Tamattuʿ6 means entering iḥrām for ʿumrah during the months of Hajj and, after completing it

(2) In manuscript M, both occurrences read "and" instead of "or". (3) Manuscript A reads "yalzam" (is obligatory). (4) Manuscript A includes the additional word "lahu" (for him). (5) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya maintains that qiran (the combined form of pilgrimage) is superior to tamattu (the interrupted form) for whoever has brought a hady (sacrificial animal), whereas tamattu is preferable for the one who has not; see Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 26:86 ff. (6) Manuscript M reads "and tamattu", with the conjunction "and".
