Section on the acts that nullify the fast
They number twelve:
- Menstrual bleeding;
- Post-partum bleeding;
- Death;
- Apostasy;
- Forming a firm resolve—or even wavering—to break the fast;
- Deliberately inducing vomiting;
- Administering a rectal enema2;
- Swallowing phlegm after it has reached the mouth.
The ninth: cupping specifically,3 whether one performs it or has it performed on him.
The tenth: ejaculation produced by repeated looking—not by a single glance, by mere mental reflection, a wet dream4, or pre-seminal fluid.
The eleventh: the emission of semen or pre-seminal fluid resulting from kissing, touching, masturbation, or any physical intimacy short of full intercourse.
The twelfth: anything—liquid or otherwise—that reaches the stomach, throat, or brain.
(2) Al-Lubadi remarks (Hashiyah, p. 138) that, according to Al-Insaf, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah held that none of the following breaks the fast: any form of rectal injection (ihtiqan), treating deep penetrating wounds (jaifah and ma’mumah), or using kohl, even when it is known to reach the throat.
(3) Al-Lubadi further notes (p. 139) that this is the official Hanbali position, endorsed by the majority of its scholars, and counts among the school’s distinctive rulings.
(4) Manuscript “N” omits the negation particle “la”.
