Huquq Al al-BaytIbn Taimiya

with the passage of time. It was one of the beauties of Islam that the very person who endured that calamity—and upon whom it first descended—was the one who narrated this ḥadith. There is no doubt that Allah ordained this as an honor for al-Ḥusayn (may Allah be pleased with him), raising his rank and station with Him, granting him the stations of the martyrs and reuniting him with the members of his household who had already been tested with many kinds of trials. Ḥasan and Ḥusayn had not faced tribulations on the scale of those borne by their grandfather, their mother, and their uncle, for they were born in the glory days of Islam and were reared in the laps of the believers. Allah therefore perfected His favor upon them through martyrdom—one by poison and the other by the sword—because with Allah there are lofty degrees in His abode of honor that can only be attained by those who are tried. As the Prophet ﷺ was asked, “Which people are tried most severely?” He replied, “The prophets, then the righteous, then those nearest to them, then those nearest. A person is tested in proportion to the strength of his religion: if his religion is firm, his trial is increased; if his religion is weak, it is lightened for him. The believer continues to be tried until he walks upon the earth free of sin.” (1)

Anyone who assisted in his killing or approved of it has thereby doomed himself. What Allah has legislated for the believers, when calamity strikes no matter how great, is that they say: “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.” (2)

Al-Shāfiʿī relates in his Musnad that when the Prophet ﷺ passed away and his family were stricken by the calamity that befell them, they heard a voice saying: “O family of the Messenger of Allah! With Allah there is consolation for every calamity, compensation for every loss, and recovery for everything missed. Put your trust in Allah alone, place your hopes in Him; the truly afflicted one is he who is deprived of the reward…” They believed that it was al-Khidr who had come to offer them condolences for the Prophet ﷺ.
