and is mistaken, he has one reward.1 This is a sound and famous hadith.
It is also authentically reported that when he was at the Battle of the Confederates and Allah repelled the confederate forces in their rage so that they gained nothing, the Prophet commanded a march against Banu Qurayzah, saying to his Companions, “Let none of you perform the afternoon prayer except at Banu Qurayzah.”
While they were on the road the time for the prayer arrived. Some said, “We will not pray until we reach Banu Qurayzah,” whereas others said, “He did not intend us to miss the prayer; he only wished us to hasten,” so they prayed on the way. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—did not censure either group.
The Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in this incident accords with what Allah the Exalted says in His Book: “And David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field when the sheep of the people strayed therein by night; We were witnesses to their judgment. So We gave Solomon understanding of it, and to each of them We gave judgment and knowledge.”2
Thus Allah informs us that He singled out one of the two prophets with insight into the ruling in that case while praising both for the knowledge and wisdom He had granted them.
In the same way, the foremost early ones among the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them with excellence—may Allah be pleased with them and they with Him—were3, in the matters over which they differed, people of ijtihād sincerely seeking the truth.
