The Prophet’s Household and Their Distinctive Merits

Who exactly are the People of the Household?

There is no doubt that Allah has imposed upon us toward them the same reverence He has prescribed for His deputies, the members of His Prophet’s Household, the earliest forerunners, and those who follow them with excellence.

Allah the Exalted says: “O Prophet, say to your wives: If you desire the life of the world and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and release you graciously. But if you desire Allah, His Messenger, and the Abode of the Hereafter, then surely Allah has prepared for those of you who excel a tremendous reward.” 1

Imam Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi, and others report from Umm Salamah that when this verse was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ gathered ʿAli, Fatimah, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn under his cloak and said, “O Allah, these are the people of my household, so remove from them all defilement and purify them completely.” 2

His Sunnah explains, clarifies, and gives eloquent expression to the Book of Allah.

Hanbal in the Musnad, 4/104, 405, 409. Al-Suyuti cites it in al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, no. 9143, and, after attributing it to the Two Shaykhs, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Nasai, declares it authentic. أهل البيت وخصائصهم: من هم أهل البيت؟ ولا ريب أن الله قد أوجب فيهم من حرمة خلفائه وأهل بيته والسابقين الأولين, والتابعين لهم بإحسان ما أوجب. قال الله تعالى: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ إِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا فَتَعَالَيْنَ أُمَتِّعْكُنَّ وَأُسَرِّحْكُنَّ سَرَاحاً جَمِيلاً. وَإِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ أَعَدَّ لِلْمُحْسِنَاتِ مِنْكُنَّ أَجْراً عَظِيماً﴾ ١. وقدر روى الإمام أحمد والترمذي وغيرهما عن أم سلمة: أن هذه الآية لما نزلت أدار النبي ﷺ كساءه على علي وفاطمة والحسن والحسين ﵃ فقال: "اللهم هؤلاء أهل بيتي فأذهب عنهم الرجس وطهرهم تطهيرا" ٢. وسنته تفسر كتاب الله تبينه, وتدل عليه, وتعبر عنه.
