In the well-known hadith recorded by al-Tirmidhi and others from the Commander of the Believers, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ said: “There will be a trial.” I asked, “What is the way out of it, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “The Book of Allah: in it is the report of those before you, the news of those who will come after you, and the ruling concerning what occurs among you. It is decisive, not frivolous. Whoever abandons it out of tyranny, Allah will crush him; and whoever seeks guidance elsewhere, Allah will let him go astray. It is the firm rope of Allah, the wise reminder, the straight path. Desires cannot twist it, tongues cannot confuse it, it never wears out through repeated recitation, and its marvels never end. Allah the Exalted also says in His Book: “Hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allah, and do not be divided.” 2.
And He says: “Indeed, those who split up their religion and became sects—you have nothing to do with them whatsoever.” 3.
Thus He censured those who splintered into parties and factions, and He praised those who agreed with one another and advanced together, clinging to the rope of Allah—which is His Book—as a single community following the prophets.
As He says: “Indeed, of his adherents was Abraham.” 4. And Abraham is the leader of the prophets, as Allah the Most High says:
