up to His words:
“My Lord, support me against the people who spread corruption,”
and up to His words:
“because of their continual defiance,”
—and His saying:
“marked by your Lord for the transgressors.”
Indeed, a man’s mere looking and physical contact can even culminate in polytheism, as the Exalted says:
“Yet among people are those who take others besides Allah as equals, loving them as they should love Allah.” ⦗Al-Baqarah 2:165⦘
For this reason, infatuation with outward forms arises only from a weakness in loving Allah and a weakness of faith. Allah, exalted is He, mentions it in the Qurʾan solely in connection with the idolatrous wife of the ʿAzīz and with the idolatrous people of Lot. The man who is madly infatuated becomes a slave to his beloved, yielding to him, his heart held captive by him.
Allah knows best, and may Allah bless Muhammad.
