Ḥijāb al-Marʾah wa-Libāsuhā fī al-ṢalāhIbn Taimiya

she is not required to wear the jilbab when praying inside her home; what is compulsory for her is a khimar (head-cover) and a long shirt that reaches over the tops of her feet. When she prostrates, the soles of her feet may therefore appear. She is likewise allowed to leave her face and hands uncovered, even though—according to his preferred opinion—they are part of her ʿawrah outside the prayer. See ⦗13–15⦘

  1. Conversely, if a woman prays by herself she is instructed to cover her head, whereas outside the prayer she may uncover it in her house and in the presence of her unmarriageable kin. Thus, a worshipper might cover during prayer what she is permitted to expose outside it, and something may appear in prayer that she would normally conceal from men. ⦗12–13⦘

This too is among the fine points that Shaykh al-Islam—may Allah have mercy on him—undertook to clarify; may Allah reward him abundantly for his service to Islam.

Another illustration is that, while affirming that the hijab is exclusive to free women rather than

(1) The majority of scholars—Abu Hanifa, Malik, al-Shafi‘i, and likewise Ahmad in a position reported by the author himself (p. 24)—held that a woman’s face and hands are not part of the awrah (that which must be covered). This is the position I defended in my book *The Muslim Woman’s Hijab*, adducing evidence from the Quran, the Sunnah, and reports concerning the women of the early generations—evidence that may not generally be found assembled in any other work. This does not mean that covering the face is not legislated; rather, it is preferable, as I explained in a dedicated chapter of that book entitled “The Legitimacy of Covering the Face” (pp. 47–53 of the third edition). Therefore, anyone who, in attempting to refute me on this issue, has attributed to me the claim—or something close to it—that a woman is obliged to uncover her face has lied and slandered me, as the aforementioned chapter makes clear.
