Ḥijāb al-Marʾah wa-Libāsuhā fī al-ṢalāhIbn Taimiya
  1. Others have said: it is like his two hands, so it should not be covered with a niqab, a burqa, or anything else tailored to the exact shape of the face, and this is the sounder view; for the Prophet ﷺ prohibited only gloves and the face-veil.

The women would merely draw a cloth down over their faces to screen them from unrelated men without placing anything that protruded away from the skin, 1 so it is understood that her face follows the same ruling as the man’s hands and as her own hands. Since, as noted earlier, the woman in her entirety is ʿawrah, she may cover her face and her hands, 2 but not with a garment custom-fitted to the limb—just as the man does not wear trousers but wraps himself with an izār. And Allah, exalted is He, knows best.

(1) That is, during ihram. The author, may Allah have mercy on him, is referring to the hadith in which Aishah said: “Riders would pass by us while we were in a state of ihram with the Messenger of Allah. When they came alongside us, one of us would lower her outer garment from her head over her face.” This is an authentic hadith, recorded in *al-Hijab*, p. 50. (2) I say: If a woman in ihram may cover her face by lowering her garment over it, this refutes the interpretation of the hadith concerning the Khathami woman, whom al-Fadl ibn al-Abbas was looking at in Mina. According to that interpretation, the Prophet did not order her to cover her face because she was in a state of ihram. The author’s statement alludes to a refutation of this view. Accordingly, the hadith indicates that a woman’s face is not an awrah; otherwise, the Prophet would have ordered her to cover it. This does not contradict the fact that covering the face is preferable, as I explained in *al-Hijab*. The issue here concerns obligation, so this distinction should be noted.
