[Section on the Covering of Women and Men]
Thus, the prescribed covering applies as follows: women from men, men from other men, and women from other women, with respect to the particular ʿawrah (the parts of the body that must remain concealed). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“A man must not look at the ʿawrah of another man, nor may a woman look at the ʿawrah of another woman.” 1
He also said, “Guard your ʿawrah except from your wife or those whom your right hand possesses.”
I asked, “What if people are closely gathered together?” He replied, “If you can manage that no one sees it, then let no one see it.”
I asked, “And if one of us is alone?” He said, “Allah is worthier that one feel shy before Him.” 2
He further forbade a man to lie with another man beneath one garment, and a woman to lie with another woman beneath one garment. 3
Regarding children he said, “Command them to pray when they are seven, discipline them for it when they are ten, and separate them in their beds.” 4
