the concealed adornment, and whether something is to be displayed or kept hidden is determined by what she is legally allowed to reveal. For this reason she may show that concealed adornment to her close relatives, whereas certain matters are reserved exclusively for the husband and not shared with the kin. His words, “and let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms” (Q 24:31), indicate that the neck must be covered; it therefore belongs to what is concealed rather than apparent, along with whatever rests on it, such as a necklace and the like.
