4 – From ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar, traced back to the Prophet ﷺ: “Yellow is the dye of the believer, red is the dye of the Muslim, and black is the dye of the unbeliever.” Al-Haythamī comments: “It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and in its chain is a narrator I do not know.”
I say: Whoever examines these reports will have no doubt that dyeing with black is categorically unlawful for everyone. This is the view held by a number of scholars, as already quoted from Ibn al-Qayyim, who said, “This is unquestionably the correct opinion.”
As for the ḥadith: “The best thing with which you can dye is this black; it will make your women more desirous of you and will inspire greater awe in the hearts of your enemy,” recorded by Ibn Mājah 2/382, its isnād is weak, for two of its transmitters are unreliable. A detailed discussion may be found in al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah, no. 2972.
