dyeing the hair black is disliked to the degree of being prohibited.
Al-Haythamī cites the ḥadith in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid 5/161 with the wording: “They will blacken their hair, and Allah will not look at them,” the rest of the report being the same; then he adds, “It was transmitted by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ, and its isnād is sound.” It is corroborated by a marfūʿ report from Ibn ʿUmar recorded by Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ikhmīmī in his Ḥadīth 2/11/1.
2 – From Abū al-Dardāʾ, marfūʿ: “Whoever dyes (his hair) black, Allah will blacken his face on the Day of Resurrection.” Al-Haythamī remarks: “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it; it contains al-Waḍīn ibn ʿAṭāʾ, whom Aḥmad, Ibn Maʿīn, and Ibn Ḥibbān deemed reliable, while critics of lesser standing judged him weak; the rest of the narrators are trustworthy.” Ibn Ḥajar, after attributing the ḥadith to al-Ṭabarānī and Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim (10/292), comments: “Its chain is soft (weak).”
3 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) related: “We were once with the Prophet ﷺ when some Jews entered. Seeing that their beards were white, he said, ‘Why do you not change them?’ They replied, ‘They dislike doing so.’ He then said ﷺ, ‘But you—change it, and keep me away from black.’” Al-Haythamī says: “Al-Ṭabarānī reported it in al-Awsaṭ; it contains Ibn Luhayʿah, while the rest of the transmitters are trustworthy. The ḥadith is ḥasan.”
