Know that Qatadah did not relate from any Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except Anas. When he was asked, “What about Ibn Sarjis?” it was as though he did not consider that a direct audition.1
His statement under no. 9 reads: “… on the authority of ʿAbd-Allah ibn Maʿqil …” — that is how it appears, but the correct name is Ibn Mughaffal.2 The Prophet ﷺ said, “None of you should urinate in the place where he bathes and then perform his ablution there, for most obsessive misgivings arise from that.” It was reported by the Five.
I say: The verdict on this hadith is the same as on the one before it, for every chain that transmits it revolves around al-Hasan al-Basri from ʿAbd-Allah ibn Mughaffal. Although al-Hasan al-Basri is of lofty rank, he is well known for tadlis, as Burhan al-Din al-Halabi remarked. Ibn Hajar states in al-Taqrib, “He often transmitted mursal reports and practised tadlis,” and al-Dhahabi writes, “He engaged in tadlis frequently; whenever he says in a hadith ‘from So-and-so,’ its evidentiary value is weakened — especially when it concerns those he is said not to have heard, such as Abu Hurayrah and others.”
Al-Tirmidhi likewise hinted at the weakness of this report; after citing it he said, “It is a singular hadith.” For that reason I placed it in Daʿif Abi Dawud, no. 7.
Yet there is another hadith on the topic with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah forbade any of us to comb his hair every day, or to urinate in the place where he bathes.”
