Preface to the First Edition:

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils within our souls and from the consequences of our deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can mislead; and whomever He lets stray, none can guide.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

“O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims.” (Quran 3:102)

“O mankind, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the two spread many men and women. Fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the womb-ties. Indeed, Allah is ever Watchful over you.” (Quran 4:1)

“He will rectify your deeds for you and forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly achieved a tremendous success.” (Quran 33:71) 1.

(1) This is the khutbat al-haja that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught his Companions; the early generations customarily opened their lessons and writings with it. I have authored a concise treatise on the subject, collecting the various chains and wordings of the hadith and noting benefits appropriate to its theme. It was recently published at the expense of the Islamic Civilisation Society in Damascus, then reissued by Al-Maktab al-Islami in a second, expanded and revised edition.

مقدمة الطبعة الأولى: "إن الحمد لله نحمده ونستعينه ونستغفره ونعوذ بالله من شرور أنفسنا ومن سيئات أعمالنا من يهده الله فلا مضل له ومن يضلل فلا هادي له. وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله. ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ﴾ . ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالاً كَثِيراً وَنِسَاءً وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي تَسَاءَلُونَ بِهِ وَالْأَرْحَامَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيباً﴾ . ﴿يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزاً عَظِيماً﴾ ١.

١ هذه خطبة الحاجة التي كان رسول الله "ﷺ" يعلمها أصحابه وكان السلف يفتتحون بها خطبهم في دروسهم وكتبهم ولي فيها رسالة لطيفة جمعت فيها طرق حديثها وألفاظها وذكرت فيها فوائد تتناسب مع موضوعها وقد طبعت قريبا على نفقة جمعية التمدن الإسلامي بدمشق ثم طبعها المكتب الإسلامي طبعة ثانية جميلة مزيدة ومنقحة.
