any benefit, and stipulating it would be utterly futile.
Al-Nawawī noted the same point in al-Majmūʿ, 1/173.
Al-Sayyid Sābiq then said: “On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once set out on a journey …” — and in the narration it states that the Prophet ﷺ said to him:
“O keeper of the cistern, do not inform him; he is being over-scrupulous. They have for themselves what their bellies have carried, while for us there remains what we may drink and use for purification.” This was transmitted by al-Dāraquṭnī.
I say: This report is weak as well. In al-Dāraquṭnī, 1/26, the chain contains Ayyūb ibn Khālid al-Ḥarrānī, whom al-Ḥāfiẓ graded “weak.” In addition to that weakness, Ayyūb was inconsistent in his isnād (chain of transmission): at one time he said, “Muḥammad ibn ʿAlwān narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar,” and at another he said, “Khiṭāb ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī, from Nāfiʿ,” both reaching Ibn ʿUmar.
As for Muḥammad ibn ʿAlwān, al-Azdī declared him “abandoned.” Khiṭāb ibn al-Qāsim is reliable, but he became confused toward the end of his life, as noted in al-Taqrīb. Moreover, I do not know the narrator from Ayyūb, Ismāʿīl ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ḥarrānī. Al-Ḥāfiẓ hinted at the weakness of this ḥadith in al-Talkhīṣ, and al-Shawkānī followed him in al-Sayl al-Jarrār, 1/60.
He (al-Sayyid Sābiq) further said: “And from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd that ʿUmar went out with a contingent that included ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ …” — and in it ʿUmar said:
“Do not tell us, for we and the beasts of prey drink from one another’s water.” This was recorded by Mālik in the Muwaṭṭaʾ.
I say: This report is found in the Muwaṭṭaʾ, 1/46, through Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd from Muḥammad ibn
