Tamam al-MinnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Concerning the making up of missed days from Ramadan:

His statement: “Making up the fasts of Ramadan is not required immediately; rather, the duty is elastic and may be fulfilled at any time, and the same applies to expiation.”

I say: This clashes with the divine command, “And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord” (Āl ʿImrān 3:133). The correct position is that one must hasten to make up the missed fasts as soon as one is able, and this is the view of Ibn Ḥazm (6/260). Nothing sound in the Sunnah contradicts this.

As for the author’s proof for non-immediacy, namely his words: “It is authentically reported from ʿĀʾishah that she would make up what she owed from Ramadan in Shaʿbān—recorded by Aḥmad and Muslim—and she did not make it up when she was able,” this reasoning is unsound. The hadith of ʿĀʾishah does not state that she was able to make it up right away; in fact, it indicates the opposite, for the wording in Muslim (3/154–155) reads:
