Third: It seems he sensed the oddity of that additional phrase, and for that reason he confined its lexical meaning to the portion that arouses no objection. Thus he explained it in his note as “a man’s playful caressing of his wife,” omitting the word “intercourse,” which is normally the ultimate object of such play, because he regarded it as offensive. Had he been acquainted with the authentic hadiths, their wordings, and which expressions are sound and which are not, he would not have slipped into this linguistic error as well.
This al-Ghumari has many other mistakes and declares numerous hadiths authentic in his Kanz and elsewhere. I have pointed out a large number of them in volumes three and four of Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Daʿifah; consult the introductions to those volumes.
Under the heading “The prohibition of fasting Friday alone” he writes: “From ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Juwayriyah bint al-Harith while she was fasting on a Friday. He asked her, ‘Did you fast yesterday?’ She said, ‘No.’ He asked, ‘Do you intend to fast tomorrow?’ She said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Then break your fast.’ Reported by Ahmad and al-Nasaʾi with a good chain.”
I say: al-Bukhari also narrated it from Juwayriyah herself. It is a single hadith, but the transmitters differed: some related it through the Musnad of Ibn ʿAmr, others through the Musnad of Juwayriyah, and that is the version preferred by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari. See my notes on Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2162 and Sahih Abi Dawud 2093.
Under the heading “The prohibition of singling out Saturday for fasting” he says: “From Busr al-Sulami, on the authority of his sister al-Ṣammaʾ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Do not fast on Saturday except for what has been made obligatory upon you….’ Reported by Ahmad and the compilers of the Sunan; al-Hakim declared it authentic according to the criteria of Muslim, and al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan.”
I say: The scholars have differed regarding this hadith; those whom the author mentions have strengthened it and have said—
