Tamam al-MinnahNasir al-Din al-Albani

From the chapter on the two ‘Id prayers:

The author says: “It is an emphatic sunnah; the Prophet ﷺ maintained it consistently and instructed both men and women to go out for it.”

I reply: The wording of that command denotes obligation. If going out is obligatory, then the prayer itself is, a fortiori, obligatory—as is plain. The correct view, therefore, is that the ‘Id prayer is mandatory, not merely recommended. One proof is that it cancels the Jumu‘ah (Friday prayer) when the two coincide on the same day, as the author noted earlier; what is not obligatory cannot set aside an obligation, as Siddiq Khan stated in al-Rawḍah al-Nadiyyah. For a full treatment, see that work and al-Sayl al-Jarrār 1 / 315.

Under hadith no. 1 he writes: “From Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, from his father, from his grandfather: the Prophet ﷺ used to wear a patterned Yemeni cloak on every ‘Id. Narrated by al-Shāfiʿī and al-Baghawī.”

I comment: There are several points to note. First: al-Shāfiʿī relates it in al-Umm through the route of Ibrāhīm from Ja‘far with the same wording.
