in Medina, for Ibn ʿUmar was a Medinite, as everyone knows.
Once this is clear, the version narrated by Abū Dāwūd provides no support for the distinction advanced by Ibn Taymiyyah—and which Ibn al-Qayyim claimed the ḥadīth substantiates—for three reasons:
First: the assertion is that he performed six rakʿahs.
Second: the report is tied specifically to the Sacred Mosque, whereas the claim is presented without such restriction.
Third: the narration is mawqūf (a Companion’s own practice), so it has no binding evidentiary force; it is entirely possible that Ibn ʿUmar did so because of some personal consideration, or for any of the other reasons listed by al-Shawkānī in Nayl al-Awṭār, 3/239.
